I was watching the sky tonight (around 9:00 pm Atlantic time) with binoculars. I saw a number of objects moving in the sky a) planes, I know planes, red and white flashing lights; b) white lights (about the size of a star) traveling across the sky NW to SE, c) two light (same size as before) traveling N to S, one following the other, both at the same speed (could not tell how far apart they were from each other) and d) another lone light traveling N to S. All of thes were in the eastern portion fo the sky. more

Voting Question: What is a good pair of night vision goggles/binoculars that's wouldn't break the bank?

I play airsoft and ive been playing milsim for about 3 years and i like to play a lot of night games, but i cant see anyone so its really difficult to actually kill some people. and where i play they rarely allow you to use flashlights, only thermal, night vision and lasers. all i have is a laser but i really need some night vision goggles. would anyone know whats a good pair of NVG (night vision goggles) that's cheap, but has good quality? Resolved Question: What was this faint fuzzy I saw last night? Was it andromeda galaxy?

It was right about where I would have expected andromeda to be, except it seemed like it was further up in the sky from andromeda (constellation) than I expected based on the sky charts I've seen and my planisphere. This thing was almost as close to casseopeia as it was to andromeda. It was naked eye invisible. Through the binoculars it was a fuzzy object, looked like a little ball of lint. I'm pretty sure it was a galaxy because it sort of had a disc shape and it looked like it was a bit brighter in the center. Whatever it was, it was the first deep sky object I've ever spotted on my own and it was quite exciting. I only wish I had a telescope to get a better look at it! What else could it have been? What else is there in that part of the sky? more

Resolved Question: What should I aim for in the night sky with my 9x63 binoculars?

I have already spotted Andromeda and all of the planets up to Saturn. I have tried to find some nebulae and I couldn't find any of the ones I looked for. My viewing conditions are *OKAY* at best, but not very good. There are street lamps that are on throughout the night and I can only see up to about 2.8 magnitude stars with my naked eye. more

I know that with binoculars there are limits to what you can see compared to a telescope but at the moment I cant get one so would like to know if anyone knows what objects I could get a half decent view of. Also does anyone know of a FREE online real time star map for the UK (Im just south of london). My Hanoptik bino specs are 20-100x30.Thanks for the tips and sites so far very helpful,I will have to make do with these binos for now even though as some have said they are not ideal,as long as I can make some things out I will be happy as just starting out. I am 13 years old. I have been interested in Astronomy since I was 9 or 10 years old. I have been using binoculars to study the night sky on a regular basis for about 6 months now and I want a telescope. A good telescope in the 100$-350$ range. I would prefer that it was a refractor telescope that comes with a steady stand. I usually look at Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and the Moon. I will occasionally look at stars and nebulae. I would also like to be able to take pictures of the night sky with it. Please give me a link of where to buy it.I no longer want to take pictures with it. I simply want to enjoy the planets and the stars. Keep in mind that I am a 13-year-old, so don't give me a super complicated telescope.It's summer and there has never been an astronomy club at the Jr. High. I am an amateur astronomer who's spent a year or so looking at the night sky through good binoculars and can identify about 20 or so stars and constellations without help-- I thought I might buy a cheap telescope for out in the Canadian wilderness where I work. I can get this telescope for a great price but not sure if I should expect the GoTo computer to work. Resolved Question: Questions from a greenhorn in telescope use. Can you help me?

In my first observation night with an 8" dob I noticed that the finder scope, the ocular and all the exterior was covered in moisture ( I don't know how to say this in english, water vapor condensed on the scope). The primary mirror was not but the image in the finder scope was affected. What is your solution for that? I'm worried that the water vapor will damage de scope optics or even the mount (made from wood and, of course, covered with something smooth and white). Beside that I find it very hard to watch (locate actually) something which is not near the horizon. I manage to find the moon venus (nothing interesting ) mars (the same) saturn (awesome ) and jupiter. All that in a long night of watching. But I cannot find a cluster or a galaxy even if I have a chart. If I try to find a star near the zenith for example I don't even know if I got it or not. The finder scope gives me an mirrored view and that is confusing. I tried to use my 10x50 binocular but I don't even know what to do if the imagine in the finder scope is a mess. Resolved Question: has anyone noticed some strange flights around eastern minnesota or west central wisconsin?

for months now, my wife has been mentioning a strange light appearing on the southwestern horizon, toward minneapolis saint paul, appearing to be coming directly towards our home, and then dissapearing at some point. One night about a month ago she pointed it out to me and I observed what appeared to be a very bright(meteor-like) object. I thought it to bright to be an airplane, however, on another night, at about the same time, the bright light appeared again and this time I had the binoculars handy and decided it was an airplane. This was confirmed on yet another night when the light did not disapear, but instead became apparent to be part of a larger "flight" of aircraft of various kinds. The first one i could confirm was a low flying and rather slow large aircraft that looked like me to be a large passenger craft, lit up with what appeared to be stadium lights. After this I paid more attention and found that the large, brightly lit craft appeared to have what I would only assume to be a contingent of fighter escorts, which I could not confirm as these smaller, faster craft never flew close enough for me to view them as clearly as the stream of large low flying craft. The larger craft were flying on what appeared to be exactly the same line of flight as one another, with a fairly good space between each craft(many miles each). Just wondering what was up with this, and if anyone else had noticed. Just one more comment, the night that I got the good look at the large craft was a very cloudy night, on the clear nights the planes all just seem to dissapear at some point.Oh, c'mon, military experiments...stop asking unless I have a death wish???? I already figure them to be some kind of military flight, considering the fighter escorts, which have never been observed here with bomber transports that I know of. Did I mention that the larger craft appeared to be standard civilian style jet liners? Other than the extra lights anyway. These flights have been occurring on a fairly regular basis, some times every night. Now, with a couple of clear nights in a row, I haven't noticed them, though I wasn't out watching for them actively. Does make me wonder if I tipped somebody off, and they put the brakes on whatever it was, lol!!! more

I don't have enough money to buy real over 200 dollars night vision right now so i order a 50 dollars toy. Ever heard of EyeClops Night Vision Infrared Stealth Binoculars, yes yes i know it's a toy but i was just wondering, would i be able to look up at the sky and see some stars with them? I've seen some videos on youtube with people outside with them and recording the lcd screen inside of them but they never pointed it to the sky. It works with IR light so i was wondering, maybe right before the sun fully goes down i would be able to see star light or maybe if i bought a ir illuminator. IDK what do you think? Last night we were at the countryside to have night-sky watch. Even prior to that, at so many times during the past two-three months, I tried to view the Saturn from my rooftop. But, on both occasions, I was unable to see the famous rings of the Saturn and the little color of it. I used both the 8" Dobs as well as the 12X50 Binoculars. Is it that the Saturn is at its farthest from Earth now-a-days? more

So it took a while to get someone to go with me so we have row Double V. I want to bring binoculars and my good camera for the main stage at night but during the day i fully intend on jumpin around and enjoying the side stage. Resolved Question: Is there a way to enhance detail at far distances with a webcam?

I have a webcam that was supposedly hd, but it doesn't do a very good job. Short range it does fine, but I need something that can record things in detail from far away on my ranch. People have been trespassing and if I could get their facial features to give to the police it would make things easier. They usually do this at night, but there is enough light for the camera to catch it. I have tried putting the camera in binoculars and thought of using a telescope, but they just don't seem to work. If I have to buy a new camera, it's alright, but I would rather not. Also, is there any telescope, etc. to use to magnify the distance? more

Resolved Question: Very slow shooting star?

Last night 4 friends and myself were stargazing and saw a couple shooting stars. Later in the night we saw what looked like shooting stars, but they moved very slowly and changed direction abruptly (like nearly a 90 degree angle). We saw about 9 of these 'objects'. We looked through high powered binoculars, trying to see if they were maybe planes, but we saw no blinking lights or colored lights. They were white, like I said almost exactly like a shooting star. It was slightly eerie, as none of us had ever seen anything like it. Any info would be much appreciated. more

I have a pair of binoculars. They are fully-coated optics. I don’t know what these next few numbers represent, but I think they are important. 20X50, 168FT/1000YD and 56M/1000M. Unfortunately, they do not have night vision or infrared technology. I want a pair of binoculars as good as or even better than the binoculars I mentioned above. Obviously, I want them to allow me to see well in the dark at great distances. I don’t care about the exact numbers if it’s about durability or weight as long as it’s not that heavy and is remarkably durable. Are there any binoculars out there that fit the bill above? Also, if it’s possible, I want them to be mechanical binoculars, not electronic ones. Finally, is there any way to convert my pair into night vision ones? more

Resolved Question: What do you think I saw?

I saw a UFO last night. I heard an airplane flyover my house about 10:00pm and I went out to see it. About the time it flew over a hill another light caught my eye. It had two lights on the side and in front of it there was a small point of light. The bigger light was following the smaller point of light closely. In fact, it moved as if it was one object although I could not confirm if it was. It made no sound at all. Planes and jets often fly over my house and you can always hear them easily. This object did not appear to be flying as high as jets usually do. It appeared to be flying about 5000 feet up but may have been higher. I watched it for about 3 minutes (I had binoculars) and then as it got close to a mountain in the distance, I saw several aircraft fly near it in various directions. I am not saying that this thing is a alien craft, just something odd. It may have been a jet refueling in flight, although that does not explain why it made no sound. Also, for months Ii have been seeing a similar object, though not as low, flying in the same direction. The previous craft was high and appeared to traversed like a satellite but I could see something protruding like an arm. But all I could see basically was a point of light and the extension. I have seen this object two or three times now. But last night, it was much lower and I could see it better.Lola and Blue Indie, thanks for replying. You both gave good answers. The first few times I saw the object (I'm assuming that the smaller and larger objects were the same thing) it could very well have been the ISS. It was high and appeared much like a satellite and travelled fast like a satellite. But the last time I saw it, it was too large to be the ISS. It is true that the eye can be easily tricked when viewing a distant object. I failed to mention before that I have 35 years experience in amateur astronomy. I have seen various types of aircraft at night. Yes, it is possible to not hear aircraft that is high up, but this object appeared much lower in the sky and larger. I should have been able to hear it. If this object was too high up not to hear the sound, then this object was gigantic. It appeared to be about 20 times the size of a normal jet that flies overhead. Also, I live in a small town, so there isn't much other sounds to hide the sound of aircraft. more

Resolved Question: current UFO sighting for South Californians?

Well its May 6, 2010 and I am seeing what I believe is a UFO sighting. It has appeared several nights in a row and varies getting brighter or smaller (when being viewed on same night). I understand some may say that it has to do with the weather and such but I have viewed it with binoculars and it appears to have four lights and a little red one on the side. That is all I see so there is a possibility there is more or less. It is not a plane or other aircraft from here and it stays in the same spot but from hour disappears. If you don't believe it then please don't shun this info down but I just wanted to get this out there. If you want to keep an eye out for this shinning object, preferably with a telescope because I don't own one, I first saw it around 8:00 P.M. Living in South California, in the city Alhambra, look Northwest. So try looking North, towards where you would find the state of Washington on a map or literally would inevitably end up in Washington if you traveled forward for a really long time. I know not everyone lives near this area and if you Google Earth 2120 West Main Street, Alhambra, CA 91803; it should be west of that area (by the view you get on Google Earth). This has taken me a while to write because I keep getting distracted by someone who was viewing it with me. I just went outside and it's gone. Completely gone in the sense that there is no shinning object nearby the place where seen. Seen: around 8 P.M. Disappearance: 9:27 P.M. Resolved Question: neighbors saying that i am taking pictures of their kids?

my fiance's father has been staying with us for the past week, and last night he noticed from our 3rd floor window how beautiful the sunset was, so he decided to take some pics. a few hours later, we find out that the neighbors across the street are saying we were taking pictures of their kids!! like we are petifiles or stalkers or something. absolutely not true!!! then we find out today that they are going around asking other neighbors our names, ages, occupations, etc. who do they think they are?? on top of all this, she tells people that she knows we were taking pictures through the window cuz she was looking at us with binoculars!!! what is wrong with this situation? now i feel violated, and don't know where i should go with this. cops say they don't have any complaints on file against us...what would you do? by the way, mass state law states that anyone on public property or their own property can take photos of anything in plain site, so even if we were taking pics of their kids or whoever, we aren't breaking the law. this is all just stupid to me!!! more

Resolved Question: Do you hate the summer as much as I do?

I never feel safe during the spring and summer. During those seasons, all my neighbours are outside and my parents shamelessly open all the windows and people hear everything we say. I am 18 and have neighbours that are around my age and I got in an argument with one of them when I was about 14 and I haven't spoken to him since and always feel like he's lying under the windows, spying. People in the summer looking in my house when they walk in the street. I always feel so unsafe. In the winter, at least, people are indoors and it's dark at like 4. Now, it's always sunny so I can see those people. My new neighbours are up to no good. There's always a light in their house open at night in a certain room. I don't know what's going on in there. Sometimes, I look outside in the summer at night with binoculars and look inside people's houses and keep thinking, what if people do that to me too?? more

The past few months his been getting kind of possessive and jealous when I talk about going out with friends and such......... the other night I seen him across the street hiding behind cars looking at me while I was leaving my other clients house he only lives 2 blocks away plus last night i was talking to the security guard in the lobby and the security guard seen him across the street looking in at us my client has accused me of hooking up with the security guard and the security guards windshield was busted out this morning!!!!!! no proof it was him but who knows!!!! and last night I seen him again across the street watching me. Me and the security went to the 16th floor and the security guard had binoculars so i wanted to confirm it was him and I just watched him he will circle the building and watch the exits...and my client also had binoculars........and this morning all 4 of the security guards tires were flattened! and I seen him tonight across the street again just watching me!!!!!!! I am soooo creeped out and don't know how to handle the situation. Yes he is in a electric wheelchair and no i do not feel like my safety is at a high risk or anything but its still sooo creepy.
