Open Question: Is astrobiology a real field of science, or is it just a field with empty promises?

So far there's just a lot of speculation, and we've found no life elsewhere in the universe. Is it a good field to go in to? How likely is it that we will discovery life outside of Earth during our lifetime? more

Open Question: I am bound to college but I am too fascinated with the universe.?

So I am going into my final year of highschool, I have been in the college stream because I was lazy and I didn't want to do much work. In the past year or two I have been overcome with this profound obsession with Astrophysics, Astronomy and Astrobiology. Pretty much everything space. I simply need a job in one of these fields, NEED. Can someone give me a pathway I can take to getting a bachelors or Masters in one of the fields I listed. As in, are there any colleges that offer classes for these courses. I checked Humber and Seneca in Ontario but I couldn't find any full time programs relating to these fields. I want to first go to college and work my butt off and than go to university and hopefully one day get a Masters or PhD. Can someone reference a college where I can start and how I can get going in one of these fields please? When I looked through the different courses at the colleges around my area, there were only specific courses like Paramedic training, or 3D modelling or Fashion. Are there colleges (colleges not universities) where I can take physics and what not?So can you take physics in college? As in college like Humber college. more

Resolved Question: Christians: For all the time we've been on Earth, why did God only decide to intervene 2,000 years ago?

If you DON'T believe that the Earth is 6,000 years old then it's you to whom I'm addressing the question. Now, humans have been around for about a hundred thousand years, and that's only humans in their modern anatomy. Homo sapiens altogether have existed for about half a million years (source: http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/ask-an-astrobiologist/question/?id=1522). And only in the last two millenia have any advances been made in medicine; only in the last few centuries have SIGNIFICANT advances been made in science and technology, all of these things solving major problems and ultimately allowing humans to survive for much longer. So why, if a loving, caring, all in all benevolent and omnipotent God created humans all those millenia ago, would he wait so incredibly long to intervene and send down part of himself? What's the logic in procrastinating all that time? Sure, he's a free agent, sure, he's not forced to help us, but I think it's a little odd that someone would create a species and then have no desire whatsoever to ensure their prolonged survival when he is perfectly capable of doing so. By the way, please don't respond if all you can tell me is that we can't understand the way God works or he is incomparable to human beings; something of that ilk. I'm looking for slightly less woolly responses, please. more

Resolved Question: Best University for Astro Sciences?

I'm an Ontario resident looking for a University in Ontario for Space Science; Astronomy, Cosmology, Planetary and Stellar Science, Astrophysics, Astrobiology, etc., and I'm trying to figure out the best place to go to for my Post-Secondary education in relation to these fields. What are my options for an Ontario University for an education in Astro Science? more

Voting Question: I'm Not a Genius, But I Love The Universe?

Astrophysics. Astrobiology. Basic Astronomy. Engineering. It is what I read, what I watch, and what I think about. I am also at that point in my life where I'm deciding what to do with the rest of it. Being a Astrobiologist (don't laugh) would probably be my dream job. Problem is, I am absolutely not a genius. Numbers do not stick in my head at all. It takes me a long time to memorize any phone numbers, and more than two or three won't stay in my mind together. I can't solve big equations in my head. Hell, I hesitate on small ones just because numbers confuse me. I can remember the names of shuttles and satellites, I can remember quotes said by those involved in launches word for word sometimes, and I can remember what they want to find, what they're worried will happen, and what they found - but I can't remember basic info like the dates of the launches or any kind of math. At all. It's as if numbers just see my mind and get incredibly depressed that they aren't letters, and therefor commit suicide. And before anyone asks, there was, in fact, a learning disorder affixed to this deficit of mine when I was younger. Honestly, I have other options. Maybe a social worker. Maybe an English teacher. Maybe working at a day care or with animals. Maybe even a journalist. But being a scientist and helping advance our understanding of the universe in any small way is the only future that has ever made me feel that huge rush of excitement and longing. I just don't know if I can do it, because I honestly am not that bright. Maybe I'd only be a hinderance to a team at the SETI institute or NASA or whatever much smaller, more realistic school I'd probably end up working at if I went through with this. Any advice from anyone who knows about this stuff? Whether 'this stuff' refers to the future, being a genius/being dumb, or sciences is up to anyone who wants to answer.I'm not looking for verification that I'm not dumb, thought thank you anyway :-) . I'm simply bad with math. (and good with other things (learning disorder is indeed still present)) Everyone has a weakness. Mine affects my desired career. more

Resolved Question: Why do you prefer Science taught in class instead of Science Fiction?

I have an alternative that will make the science class be less boring. Let's taught kids and students about the Doctor, the Daleks, Gallifrey from the Doctor Who show. Also they don't have to miss about the Bailey machines from Cleopatra 2525. Teach them also about the science experiments made in the school "Blake Holsey High" from the show "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High". At last, teach your kids about UFO sightings, about how many types UFO are (triangle ships, flying saucers). I PROMISE THIS WILL BE A LOT MORE INTERESTING THAN CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS Teach kids ASTROBIOLOGY instead of biology. Astrobiology will help kids learn about the shapes and bodies extraterrestrials can have. Teach them about BEN 10 and his Omnitrix. They will be suprised to know about all this stuff more

For me, I don't care about the money, just about the fame. But I also want to impress my fans. I want to be famous. Resolved Question: What are some Jobs that Have to Do with Astronomy/Outer Space?

Hello. I am 13, and I happen to be very interested in astronomy and outer space. At first, I wanted to be an astrophysicist, but then again, there are many jobs in the astronomy field. Being only 13, I know that my ideas and opinions will change, but it is just something to look into. If I were an astrophysicist, most likely, I would end up being a college professor, but, like I had stated before, there are many jobs within the field of astronomy. Another thing is that I am not interested in just one thing about outer space. It's the whole thing that interests me:planets, stars, black holes, ect. This may sound silly, but I am only aware of a few fields about outer space, such as astrophysics, astrobiology, cosmology, astrochemist, and astronomers. Also, being only in middle school, I have not yet had a taste of physics or chemistry, but I have learned a little about biology, if that counts. Basically, I am looking for any suggestions, comments, what some jobs that have to do with outer space are, and maybe anything else that you feel to share. I will most likely ask more questions later, haha. Also, would working for NASA seem far-fetched, or would it seem plausible, and also, would that only have to do with astronauts, or astronomy in general? Starting in early September, I will be taking a science class based on space. Thank you for your time, and also for reading this :) more

Resolved Question: How to be an Astronaut and for the love of bio?

I read that the minimum requirement for being an astronaut was getting a bachelors degree in Bio so thats BSC rite ? or bioinformatics or environmental studies ?? There's bachelors of microbiology etc Is there a bachelors in Astrobiology ? Or is there the Masters ?? "NASA's "minimum degree requirement" for an astronaut is a bachelor's from an accredited institution" "Since a college degree is a necessity, it is imperative you do well in high school first. Study hard, make good grades, especially on the SAT or ACT. Make a good decision on the course of study you wish to pursue, whether it be engineering, biological or physical science, or mathematics." "After college, you'll need 3 years of related increasingly responsible professional experience in your field. You should start preparing for this by choosing wisely when it comes to internships and coop positions in college." Resolved Question: i was almost raped on my birthday?

it was about 7 months ago.I was on holiday with 3 of my best friends(all girls) in the island were me mom comes from.We have two houses there so me and my friends stayed alone in the small one.On the night of my 15th birthday we(my friends and my parents)went up a small mountain upon which there was a fest which my mom's family held.At around 11 p.m my dad went back to the central village of the island(where our house was) and we stayed up because one of my friends had gotten a little drunk(basically just puking). My mom along with an old aunt were supposed to sleep up there and so did we.When the fest was over we thought that everyone else would go back as well. But one family(husband, wife, toddler and a friend) camped on the mountain side. Before I cut to the chase i should say that earlier that night a guy around 30 had asked us why we didn't dance like everyone else did and full me thought "what if he rapes us"and of course then i laughed at my stupid self i think i said"like that would ever happen".A little bit after that this guy helped when i threw down by accident a piece of would and when my mom started accusing me like all mothers do from time to time he said to her that it wasn't my fault and what surprised me was that he knew my name.So what happened after everyone, well almost everyone left is the following:my drunk friend and her best friend went to sleep into this small like wear-house thingy. My old aunt slept in this extremely small church(it was a greek island what did u expect?) and me and my sort of best friend slept in our sleeping bags not 10 feet away from where my mom slept. We stayed up until 1 i think looking at the stars and laughing.I think i saw a supernova(i checked the camridge s.n list and there was one that night visible from where i was)and it was like i knew, even though i dont believe in signs and stuff.I decided that i would give up writing and i would chose the next best thing, astrobiology. While I was asleep i felt something and i woke up but not woke up completely. It's this thing when you'r awake and you understand everything that happens around but you can't move your whole body, just small moves like turning your head.So I woke up facing the back of my friend.Suddenly i realised that a hand was inside my sleeping bag and inside my t-shirt.I turned my head and i only saw a shadow.I couldn't tell who it was but from the long black hair i thought it was my drunk friend.I thought she woke up and came to sleep with us.The hand was a suprise of course and for a brief moment i thought that she was turning lesbian or something and i actually considered it before totaly dismiss it.Then the hand moved to my breasts(thank god i was wearing a braw) and i was pretty sure it wasn't my friend.I turned my head two times and the second i realised it was a guy.The guy that talked to us earlier.I couldn't move,i couldn't kick my friend and i tried to turned to the other side and make his hand go away put he put it back there and he put inside my underwear. Then, without moving his hand he sort of put his whole body on mine(i was face down). That's when my mom come she thought it was one of the girls too but i think she was just faking it so that i wouldn't freak out.She pulled him back and he left. That's when i fully woke up.I got on my knees next to my friend who didnt know what happened and i cried,i was begging to go along with the other girls inside the sort of wear house. And so we did.I remeber sitting in one corner alone, shaking not letting anyone touch me.My mom kept saying it was me,i held you not some guy But after i burst into more tears and descripted to her every detail she gave up.By that time my best friend knew. She looked at me for a while and then held me,layed me down and hugged for two hours until i fell asleep.I woke up and they were all talking about it and what the kept saying for the next days was"if only it were me".When we oppened the door the family who had camped was living and the same man that i had talked to the night before, the man that would have raped me if my mom hadn't come along, the family's friend looked only at me and said goodbye with the sickest look possible. On our way down i was tempted by the edges of the cliffs but one of my friends had known, which she told me later, what i wanted to do.Ofcourse what i never told my frends, nor anybody else was that after the first ten minutes of shaking into that small wearhouse i went back to feeling nothing, like i did for the 4 months before that night.I don't know which i hate the most:that man that made me remember my best day as the worst and made me fear the one place i felt like home.My friends for worrying about their unharmed self(only one friend,a guy has been selfless about it,always protecting me when the subject came along).Or myself for not feeling something even if that was fear, for as long as i had to(for as long as everyone else would) and hating my frends who have always been there for me. Resolved Question: What is a good career for someone with a wide range of interests like animals, engineering and art?

I'm a senior in high school and planning on going to college this fall. I'm currently applying to schools with my major as physics, but I'm really interested in a lot! I absolutely adore animals and they are definitely something I can't live without. I've always been very artistic and love photography and drawing. I'm very creative and imaginative. I, of course, love physics. I find it all so very fascinating! I also, just today, got 3rd place at a miniature bridge building competition, and I really enjoyed doing it so I'm highly considering anything in engineering. I've recently become interested in astrobiology (the study of life in space) because it puts my two loves of biology and physics (astronomy) together. I would really love to open my own animal shelter someday and I plan on owning many pets. I'd really like some suggestions on what I should try to major in or plan a career in! Any help is greatly appreciated! I more

Resolved Question: does anyone else think 2012 is comeplete nonsense?

ok seriously, first people are saying this ancient god is coming, then a meteor now there saying aliens are going to invade, the dolphins, solar flare nasa said its happening but now there saying its fake i cant take ive dont some research and this is what i found:http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/ask-an-astrobiologist/intro/nibiru-and-doomsday-2012-questions-and-answers http://www.2012hoax.org/ http://hubpages.com/hub/2012-Hoax its not funny more

Resolved Question: Believers in existence of space aliens, how can you believe in aliens if astrobiology is based on research?

Believers in the existence of space aliens, I have a question for you. How can you BELIEVE in the existence of space aliens since the science which studies the theoretical existence of life on another planets, called astrobiology, is based on RESEARCH, not on beliefs. Studying the possibility of life on another planets is SCIENCE not A RELIGION and science is based on RESEARCH. How can you believe in the existence of space aliens without seeing them since this is forbidden in science? To find out if there is life on another planets you need to do research not believing. What use is for a scientist to believe in a theory if he/she does not prove it to the world? Religion is something different. Is about supernatural. You must believe something about supernatural because it cannot be proven experimentally. But since space aliens do not belong to supernatural, you must do research to find them, not believingYou haven't answered my question. I say unto you this: "Don't believe in the existence of aliens until their existence is proven else you will be the followers of a religion which teaches that space aliens exist and they are the saviors of mankind"And scientist do not believe in theories. They only say their opinions. Believing in a theory sounds like believing in unicorns or in fairies more

Resolved Question: Master's Degree + Science Career?

Just wondering what one will generally be able to do with a Master's degree (let's say for now, in Molecular Bio) with an interest in the following fields: Genetic Engineering/Gene Therapy Astrobiology Nanotechnology I'm not interested in being a professor, or leading a team. I just want to do fulfilling work I enjoy. I'd rather leave all the politics & upper-management duties up to someone else. more

Resolved Question: What are some scientific feilds that deal with space/astronomy?

I know one would be astrobiology, cosmology, astronomy....etc But I was wondering if there are anymore and what kind of work a scientist in that feild would do/study. What kind of degree would they need and do many colleges have a program for such a feild? more

Resolved Question: Emerging schools of science?

I'm planning on going back to school in 2010. I'd like to focus on a science field. I've been looking into areas like Astrobiology, Genomics & Artificial Intelligence but my mind keeps drifting to other areas that might still be in their infancy. I'd be particularly interested in something that would really start to come into it's own in another, say, ten years (since I would want a PhD in whichever field I choose). more

Resolved Question: Is NASA going to send people mars in the near future?

do you think nasa should return to the moon or skip that mission and go to the rocky red planet mars and see if we can colonize their and regenerate the planet with life and promoting global warming on that planet not earth e.g. mars may have ice in the south poll and north it may have some atmosphere they detected snow if it possible link http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/articles/nasa-mars-lander-sees-falling-snow-soil-data-suggest-liquid-past/ more

Resolved Question: My parents want me to be a nurse, but I want to be something else?

My parents, particularly my mom, wants me to go into Nursing, but I want to go into something involving research, preferably astrobiology or astrogeology. My main interest, even when I was a kid, has always been Space and the universe around us. My mom, on the other hand, wants me to go into something that involves a high salary and the promise of always being employed. I don't want to have to settle and become a nurse, because I've always had to settle for what my parents wanted to. But, I'm also afraid that if I reject their demands, they will not pay for college or just look for ways to say "I told you so." What should I do?Also, another reason my mom doesn't like my career choices is because she holds no interest in space whatsoever, as if she's the one getting the degree! more

Resolved Question: What is the study of black holes called?

i would love to study black holes as a job when i grow up, so could you tell me what the study of them is called. DO NOT say astronomy. it is not astronomy. there are many types of astronomy: solar astronomy planetary astronomy stellar astronomy galactic astronomy extra galactic astronomy cosmology astrobiology astrochemistry cosmochemistry. please can you tell me what the study of blackholes is called? more

Resolved Question: Are there any careers combining physics and zoology?

From the age of 2, approximately, I have wanted to study animals. This year, however, I fell in love with physics. I need to make my choices for university, and I went for zoology (safest way) but for the first time in my life I'm actually having doubts. I really really like physics, but I don't think I'm ready to dump zoology. Is there a way I can combine them? A friend suggested astrobiology. Also, what should I do for my uni choices? Biological sciences and physics are in different schools where I'm applying, so it's kind of a problem. more

Resolved Question: Who is with me?! the world is not going to end in 2012!?

2012 is really not going to be anything special, Even nasa said so: http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/ask-an-astrobiologist/intro/nibiru-and-doomsday-2012-questions-and-answers Even NASA knows this is not true: The Planet Nibiru Doesnt exist, if it was coming close to earth, we would have expected that from decades ago. The sun and earth always line up every year, no big deal. The planets might line up any time soon, but there is no special force and is just a curioisty not a threat. There is no way the poles will switch or whatever. There might be something happening on 2013, but it will cause little harm. Human beings always try to predict the future. Gloabl warming is the real threat, and how we humans are destroying earth. Post here your comments and proof is going to be a normal year! Dont be scare! Live to the fullest! more

Resolved Question: Help With A College Major Decision?

Hey all, I'm a sophomore in high school, and am getting interested in what I would like to major in. I know I would love to major in a science, but here's the problem: I'm great at biology, but highly dislike chemistry, and I'm really interested in astronomy, but hate physics. Several of my ideas for majors are biology, astrobiology, astronomy, aeronautical engineering, and the like. Basically, how difficult would it be to do any one of these majors knowing I don't really like physics or chemistry? As of now, I've got a 4.8 GPA and may be going full-IB. Any suggestions and/or comments are appreciated :] more
