Resolved Question: I dislocated my knee cap at work. I slipped on floors which were covered in grease?

The toilets floors were covered in a slippery residue, a college advised our manager that the floors were dangerous but she did nothing but put a small sticker on the door saying "wet floor inside" these toilets are used for both customers and employees. I went in the toilets, slipped and dislocated my patella (knee cap) I now cant walk as when I put weight through my leg I have severe instability and my knee threatens to dislocate. I am unable to work and my partner has to care for me Im only 26!!. I have previously injured my knee but it has not caused me any issues for 4 years. but now it looks like I will need to have surgery. My question is, do I have a personal injury claim case? more

Voting Question: Something wrong with my Japanese Chin!!?

My 5 year old Japanese Chin started yelping randomly (while sitting, sleeping, walking, being pet- very random) around a week ago. I took him to the vet and she checked him all over for pain (range of movement etc.) he had no positive response to any of the movements or pressure. He has a slipped patella and a bit of inflammation in his right front paw for which he started recieving Cartrophen around 3 weeks ago. Neither leg appears to be particularly painful though. Around 2 days ago he took a turn for the worse about 15 min after a little play session in which he was running around and ripping up newspaper. His back legs were shaking, he looked very lethargic and kept lying down and getting up again. He would lie down as if he had no energy left. He was tucking his paws under himself and just sort of flopping down. When he would get up he would walk in circles to the left and his head was angled left and he was panting excessively. I took him to the emergency vet and they have been unable to diagnose him. They suggested it could be an ear infection but I am skeptical as they found no sign of infection. His ears don't smell and the ear canal was not visible to the vet. He was given an anti emetic injection and sent home with antibiotics. I am incredibly worried. The night I took him home his breathing appeared more labored than usual (he is flat faced and does snore but he was snoring whilst awake!). I have been giving him antibiotics since he came home and he has not had another episode like the one the other night, however he is still yelping randomly and is not very active. Please can someone help me to figure out what is wrong with my boy!!! more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know about muscular in-balance and what causes it?

I was diagnosed with it in my hips, legs, knees, and ankles. But I think there might be more to it than that. I've had an MRI scan that showed nothing. I am currently having physiotherapy one every 6 or so weeks. It has helped but not completely. Can overexercising cause muscular in-balance? Mine became noticeable after doing 4hours constant and full-on basketball and an hour football the same day. I thought it was just a tight muscle at first so I rested it for a few days before playing in a football match where it became so bad I couldn't walk on it and ended up on crutches for a month. This was back in December and it is still a problem. When I do sport I wear a patella stabilizer bandage and it helps prevent me from twisting it because it has slightly flexible metal splints in it on either side of the knee. But the ankle is still a problem. It randomly goes into spasms that are very painful and lasts for 5-10 minutes. It's painful to the point that I'm nearly crying which is very painful because not much makes me cry from pain. This is what my knee used to do but not so much any more. And my other knee gets painful sometimes too; especially when walking upstairs. And when I am sitting down it sometimes feels like my hip is coming loose and I can't stay still for too long because my legs get painful so it makes me a real fidget-er. It's really frustrates me because it is stopping me from being able to play football, which I have done for 11years now. Does anyone else have this? Any idea or advice? more

Resolved Question: Why is my knee occasionally sore?

Basically my right knee has a dull ache that comes and goes and occasionally a sharp pain that lasts for 3 - 5 seconds. I'm a 35 year old male, used to be quite active up until my early 30's - saturday nights on the dance floor, sunday league football and weights in the gym 3 or 4 days a week - 5'11'' and 165 lbs. While I'm not as active as I once was I do still swim quite often, usually twice a week or so. The problem has been present for maybe 3 - 4 years but has gotten markedly more prominent within the last year and a half. The pain didn't start after I'd stopped being active, nor did anything happen to my knee while taking part in an activity i.e. a bad tackle or heavy lifting. Also, the pain has never stopped me from taking part in any activity nor was it present immediately upon finishing any activity. Recently, if I'm crouched down for any length of time the knee almost seizes up and is very stiff to move for the first few steps and then its back to normal. On occasion I also feel a dull throb while I'm driving and this can be relieved by repositioning the angle of my foot on the accelerator. I've done the usual self-diagnosis on several web sites but I cannot find the correct combination of symptoms to give a diagnosis. I don't believe it to be patellar tendinitis as the pain - when present - is located along the upper arc of the patella, not the lower area as these web-sites seem to indicate. Also, I'm doubtful about arthritis as the pain is intermittent and I live in a warm climate so a change in temperature triggering an attack isn't a factor and I have no other aches or pains elsewhere, at least none that aren't explainable. :) Generally, I'm a little mistrustful of doctors (had 3 family members misdiagnosed over the years, 1 died, 1 almost and the other required surgery to correct the complications) so I'd like to have some indications of possible diagnosis before I go and see the local quack. If anyone out there has any ideas or suggestions that I can look into it'd be greatly appreciated. Cheers all. more

Resolved Question: Conditioning of the knees - any advice prior to my doctor appointment?

For the past 12 months I have had a dull ache beneath my patella (knee cap). It is prominent after exercise (unsurprisingly) and I am concerned it could be something significant. I have already booked a doctor appointment, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone could help identify what it could be - I suspect tendinitis. It feels slightly sore when I press below my knee-cap (above the shin) and can hurt really badly when running. As a further question - what exercises or stretches can I do to help condition the knees? I want to avoid any problems in later life. Thanks in advance. Suggestions?Ello Guv - Thanks, but it is in both knees - is it likely to happen to both? Also, the left gets more sore than the right. But it could well be, many thanks more

Resolved Question: Dislocated Kneecap/patella and torn Cruciate Ligaments?

Hi i was recently on a skiing holiday in Pamporovo, Bulgaria. when i fell and landed awkwardly, i dislocated my patella and tore my cruciate ligaments.. The hospital there put it in plaster cast and i flew home 6 days later, on arrival back in England i visited our local hospital who took the cast off and put it in a cricket splint. well its been 3 weeks now and its still very swollen, still cant move nor bend it, still using crutches and cant put pressure on it and still in a lot of pain!! Whilst in bed last week i took the splint off and managed to redislocate it :( NOT GOOD!! I was on cocodamol and anti inflams but these were doing nothing and i couldnt sleep so am now on Tramadol which is still not working and as it is now 02.08am you can guess correctly when you assume i cannot sleep!! i am due to start Physio on wednesday but not sure what they are going to do as i cant let anyone touch it as its so sore and swollen still! they are talking about possible surgery anyway i was just wondering if anyone has had or done a similar thing and can give me any advice i am already doing the RICE thing i have it elevated whenever im sat down and in bed its raised on 2 pillows as otherwise i cant lie down. and can anyone reccomend any good pain relieving methods?? THANK YOU!!! :D more

Voting Question: Treatment for flat feet causing long term knee pain?

I've had knee pain for 4 years and about 7 months after it started I saw a consultant who moved my leg around a bit and said I had chondromalacia, just told me to rest and that was it. It didn't get better so last year I went to my doctor about it and they referred me for physiotherapy, again my leg was moved around a bit and my knee cap was taped, which did relieve the pain for the first day or two. I then discharged myself from this because I was offered physiotherapy at a musculoskeletal centre. I went for a consultation in December and it was quite thorough, I said about my previous diagnosis of chondromalacia but she said it would not be that now as I am 20. After this meeting I received a letter which said I had anterior knee pain, medial knee pain, maltracking of patella on both knees, patella irritation of the patella femoral joint, pronated feet, valgus calcaneal tendon and lumbosacral pain. I've had 2 physio sessions since then, during these I have been given 3 different types of exercises to strengthen the muscles in my thigh. When I went back for the second appointment in January the physio said there was no improvement and to continue with them for another month. I have my third appointment next week and there is still no improvement. I don't see how strengthening my thigh muscles is going to treat the other issues of valgus calcaneal tendon and pronated feet, and I also think the exercises I have been given are going to take a long time to see if they work. Is there anything I can do in the short term? I have read that the knee pain can be caused by the problems I have with my feet, so even if I get better control over my leg muscles I'm still going to have the issues of feet and ankles that are sending my kneecap off track. It's been going on for too long and I guess I do want a quick fix, but as there has been no injury to my knees and I do have these underlying issues with my feet surely I should be given treatment for this and not just exercises? more

Voting Question: I left the hospital...Can i leave it untreated?

I injured my knee 4/5 weeks ago but only just got it checked out today because i was on holiday. Aparently ive fractured my patella. its non-displaced so no surgery is required, i was told a full leg cast would be put on. What with the footy (soccer) season starting again i didnt like the idea of this so left...so im wondering if i can leave it to fix on its own?? Its fine to walk and i did it over a month ago. Anyone tell me if it is able to heal on its own?? without a cast? more

Resolved Question: Advice needed please, dislocated knee cap!!?

Hi, about 3 weeks ago I disclocated my knee cap, in Doctors terms that is a lateral left patella dislocation. I sat awkwardly on the sofa and the next thing I know I had a badly deformed knee cap..an ambulance, alot of gas and air and 5 hours later the doctor in A an E manipulated in back into place. Ever since I have been wearing a rigid leg brace and have to wear it for the next 3 weeks before returning to the hopsital. My question is how long will this take to heal, what are the chances it will happen again? (if any) and how will it affect my job...(I am a police officer). At the moment it is still swollen, and still hurts, I didn't think it was a particularly serious injury. There was me thinking they'd pop in back in and job done (so to speak). I was gobsmacked when the doctor signed me off for 6 weeks, and it has left me worrying about the longterm prospects with work particularly, in a nation where everyone sues everyone I am sure they will have something to say about me returning to frontline policing any time soon. I am confused a worrying, it is serious or not. Your experiences and answers will be much appreciated. S x more

Resolved Question: Have I fractured my patella?

I was recently involved in a collision on my bike and landed heavily, whilst initially it seemed like nothing was wrong apart from a suspected broken finger and bruising to my shoulder and hip, ive noticed a large dent/dip in my left patella running from the bottom to about 2/3rds up. i have no real pain just an ache (nothing unusual in that as I had ACL reconstruction on it 2 years ago) is it possible i have fractured or split my patella? more

Resolved Question: Which stats test shall i use?

So i have this experiment and i am comparing 2 species of barnacles and then also a species a patella and how it varies with algal species to show zonation on an intertidal rocky shore. Basically a transect was layed and the number of species (moving to different heights on a single shore) was recorded, means etc taken. The only variable is the shore height with number of species so im thinking i need to use a One-way Chi-squared test, can anyone confirm this??? And any post-hoc tests needed atall?? =/ Thankyou! Resolved Question: Slipping patella in 4-y-o, ways to improve?

I have a 4 year old cob mare (she's 1/4 tb, 1/4 irish draught, 1/2 cob) who has just been diagnosed with slipping knee caps. They're not really bad, they just kinda catch as she brings her leg through. The vet said she will grow out of it but in the meantime walk only work to start building up the muscles around the stifle to support the joint. I've started her on a low dose of a joint supplement to prevent any damage to the joint as much as possible. She's turned out as much as possible, although this is restricted in the winter - yard rules. I've started walking her out for short distances and intend to continue this, gradually increasing the distance she does as well as introducing some hill work. I plan on taking her back to the vet in six months or so to be checked again as I want the vet's ok before I start trotting her. My question is has anyone had experience with this? Also any ideas for schooling I can do while walking out - I don't want to take her in the school to start with as the deeper surface will put more strain on the joints, as will circle work - I think lateral work is probably out as well. Also what sort of age should she have matured enough for us to know how much this will improve. she is currently 15'1, mom was 16'2 and dad was 15'2 so I think she still has some growing left to do. I've been working her for about 8 months now. Thanks for you experiencesthanks for the ideas - weekends I'll ride her out (the vet said it doesn't make a difference if she is ridden or walked in hand and I can't walk far due to my own injuries) but during the week they have to be in all day for 3 days of the week and over the winter it's too dark to go out on the roads. As the vet explained it - as she brings her leg through the patella kinda catches and then goes. He said in bad cases they can lock out completly but she's not that bad. more

Resolved Question: shar pei should AKC demands changes in this breed?they have the longest genetic health problems list?

it is not fair for the dog that there is a 1 in 5 chance that he will get serious health problems like these: RESPIRATORY stenotic (pinched) nostrils elongated soft palate pneumonia -- primarily in puppies EYES entropion -- rolling in of the eyelids retinal dysplasia glaucoma "cherry eye" -- prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid EARS stenotic (narrow) ear canals bacterial ear infections yeast over growth hyperplastic otitis GASTROINTESTINAL bite problems -- most commonly, an overbite inflammatory bowel disease megaesophagus hiatal hernia intestinal adenocarcinoma SKIN lip fold pyoderma skin fold pyoderma demodectic mange allergic skin disease -- alleric inhalant dermatitis, food allergy, insect allergy, contact allergy, etc. generalized pyoderma cutaneous mucinosis ENDOCRINE hypothyroidism MYSCULOSKELETAL inquinal hernias luxating patellas -- "loose" kneecaps elbow dysplasia hip dysplasia anterior cruciate ligament rupture GENITOURINARY renal amyloidosis immune - mediated kidney disease NEOPLASIA mast cell tumor histiocytoma lymphosarcoma intestinal adenocarcinoma MISCELLANEOUS Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF) abscesses -- bite wounds, other IgA deficiency Primary Multiple Immunodeficiency Syndrome of Shar-Pei amyloidosis so should akc make the breed ilegal(and by that i mean not recognised) untill proper changes are made? poor pets and poor owners who pay towsands for a dog who will probably die in 5 year time and will suffer a lot. i love shar pei dogs i think they are great but the breed should be improvedi do not mean to offend anyone ,and statistics can be wrong but the 3 shar pei dogs i know all have really bad health problems and they are all under 3 years of ageso it means something.... more

Resolved Question: I dislocated my patella last night: Lax tendons in both knees - reccomend a knee support?

Resolved Question: The best way to rebuild atrophied leg muscles.?

Hi, I haven't walked for about 4 years and my legs are liked like matchsticks. I'm trying to learn to walk again by myself at home (I prefer to do it that way). I was wondering what is the best way to rebuild my leg muscles. I can stand for a few minutes and walk a few yards with crutches but get alot of knee pain (mainly around the patella tendons). I was wondering if it's better to concentrate on standing and walking or spending some time doing straight leg raises, etc on the floor for a few weeks. Then progressing to standing and walking? Any advice greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: How to find a top knee specialist physiotherapist?

I fractured my patella (nasty fracture), which was wired back together and I spent 6 weeks in plaster. I am currently treated by a physiotherapist who does an 'ok' job but has limited (if any) experience of my specific issue. I end up having to find advice in various places (friends, doctors, internet etc) and tell him what I learned. I am very keen to return to top performance of my knee and leg and have been looking for a physiotherapist who has the right experience to help me with that. (you know, someone who has learned the tricks through having treated many patients with fractured knees) But there seems to be no obvious route to find such specialist. I live in North London (England). Any idea where to look? (internet did not help) Are they any professional bodies that could direct me? Many thanks. more

Resolved Question: Help, Why can't I straighten out in bed!!!?

Hi this relates to previous questions I have asked about my knees and legs when in bed. I need to go and see my neurologist but if someone can give me some advice in the meantime I would be wholly grateful. I have such difficulty settling down in bed at night. My body (mainly my legs) don't want to relax and straighten out!!! I get so much pain in the tendons in my knees because my leg muscles are pulling on them the whole time. It is mainly when I try and straighten my legs but still occurs when lying on my side with bent legs. My thigh muscles seem to contract of their own accord, It's bizarre! This a particular problem, because during the day I try and get up on my legs (using a standing frame or crutches) for a short while, but my patella tendons can be so inflammed from the previous night that I can't. This is a BIG problem because I feel it is slowing down my recovery. To give you some background. I'm male,in my forties and I have not walked unaided for about 4 years. My legs are very wasted and I get allot of knee pain. I spend quite alot of time sitting with my legs stetched out in front of me but I do try and move every couple of hours or so. I've also got an electrolyte imbalance (low sodium) and osteoporosis. I try and eat healthily and apart from general pain killers and osteoporosis medication. I've been given a low dose (2mg) of Diazepam for anxiety and as a muscle relaxant. But I don't like taking it as I'm scared of becoming addicted. Sorry this is a bit of a rambling question but if you can take the time to give the matter some thought I would be really grateful. more

Resolved Question: Problem with my Fauve with a Carpal joint problem?

MY Fauve is 3 yrs old, at 18 months old he was xrayed for intermittent lameness, which was a carpal joint problem due to he's appalling conformation! He was placed on restricted exercise & hydrotherapy to build muscle to compensate. Now he is lame more often than not, with a "waddling" gait to his back legs, looks like slipping patella but vet can't feel it. Although I work at a vets, I took him to an orthopaedic specialist who has made noises about cutting a piece of bone to relieve ( I think, didn't take it all in!) the strain on his Carpal. I'm unconvinced about doing this to such a short, bowlegged little dog, spoken to work colleagues who were evasive as to the best course of action. Resolved Question: Knee operation.... after care UK?

My mum has just had open knee surgery to take out fragments of bone, grind down the patella due to sports it over grew and the tendon repaired (was split in half). She was put in a full length cast (pot) and has just had it removed. The operation was unusual as it wasn't keyhole, nor did they do a full knee replacement.., She is now finding that she is beyond stiff: she still can't bend the knee at all and she has to wait 3 weeks for physio. My question is... is it normal for it to be so stiff and to have to wait so long for physio... and what can she expect to happen next? Will she regain movement, as she is finding it stressful not being able to move? Thanks Blues Breaker.. The surgen said she'd be able to do everything as normal...... A guy friend of mine said it to me and a friend last night and the other two guys we were with were like hinting at what it meant but I was very drunk since it was my birthday and didn't get the hints at all. But the one who said it got embarassed and asked them not to reveal it. All three of them were smirking cheekily, so it has to be something cheeky. It's been annoying me all day so I'd really appreciate the help. Thankyou sooooo much in advance! Thanks for that Jazz Tiger but it's definately not that, cz when one of the other two were hinting, he asked me if I liked knees, it was always knees or kneecaps that they said, not knee. Thankyou for your input anyway though! :) more

Resolved Question: Pain around the knees?

After jogging I have a deep ache just under and to the outside of the patella, on the front of both knees. It's made worse when traversing stairs and getting up out of a chair. Standing still and upright doesn't make them hurt. I've only recently gone jogging for the 3rd time (16km was the last distance) and I'm 23, 1.66m tall and 56kg in weight, so I don't think it's a heaviness problem. To note, my knees do have a tendency to give way when jogging up stairs, and when just walking up them it feels like that are about to give way (on the brink) but they don't. I do have aching around the back of the right knee, sometimes cramping down and up the leg on the inside. That has been like that for a few months, ever since I has to run a short distance in steel-soled boots and something "snapped" (I was unable to follow through with the normal stride and I had to hop to my destination). Any ideas? Thanks. My doctor has referred me to orthopaedics as a ligament is inflamed behind the knee and my other knee clicks (didn't know that was a problem). more
