Open Question: Have you heard of somebody who is so athletically motivated yet their body is not made for sports?
i have been playing sports my whole life. i have trained and become very good at sports. but.... i have never gone a season of a sport without an injury. is this just unlucky coincidence or is it possible that my body is just not MADE to play sports. i work my butt off harder than most and i succeed in having good skill but i ALWAYS get injured.
6th grade - two badly sprained ankles, misdiagnosed inflamed metatarsal (treated for fracture), clavicle was severely bruised and almost dislocated
7th grade - broken wrist & torn ligaments in ankle
8th - broken pinky finger, sprained ankles, concussion
9th grade - concussion, whip lash, ankle problems
10th grade - torn ligaments in ankle
11th grade - torn ACL, reconstructive surgery on knee for ACL, tendinitis in knee post-opp
12th grade - still tendinitis in knee and now tendinitis in wrist
(there is more to this list that i just forgot... but theres so many injuries i cant even count them all up)
i have tried so many things. this year (12th grade) i gave up playing volleyball because it was hard on my knee and started tennis and then got tendinitis in my wrist. I am also not going to be playing soccer in the spring anymore also due to injuries. should i save myself the trouble and not play basketball? i'm sick of getting hurt and sports are no longer fun to play... but it seems like such a big deal to be on the team because i've played my whole life...
i'm not really a part of anything other than sports and now that sports are crashing down all around me and i should really not play as much.. what clubs could i join?

moreOpen Question: first pregnancy, starting to show at 11.5 weeks?
hello!
this is my first pregnancy- my husband and i are SO excited!
just some background to get started:
im 24 years old, 5'4'' and my pre-pregnancy weight was 140-141.5 lbs
my due date is march 26th, 2011 so im about 11 and a half weeks. im just wondering if anyone else was starting to show this early on? (especially with their first pregnancy.) i did not do any exercising before pregnancy- so im kinda thinking that my abs are maybe on the weaker side.
im not huge yet or anything- but i have realized that prior to pregnancy i held my tummy in all the time. (maybe it's just getting harder to do?)
also, im pretty sure that i have been feeling round ligament pain for the last 2 days on & off. it's not overly severe & there is absolutely no bleeding whatsoever... but i was wondering if anyone else had experienced this so early on.
i know every woman & every pregnancy is different- just looking for some thoughts!
thanks :)

moreOpen Question: Hurt Knee-- Doctor says Strain?
I went to my primary doctor after a doctor ordered MRI and she says Ive strained a ligament in my knee. She referred me to an orthopedic doctor of who i have not seen yet. I am wondering what the extend of a strained knee is? I always thought a strain referred to a muscle or tendon not a ligament and a strain is a small or complete tear of a muscle or tendon. When she says Ive strained a ligament does the mean Ive tore it?
moreOpen Question: I am 39 weeks pregnant and haven't experienced any braxton hicks or false labor, will I ever go into labor?
The only thing I have experienced is back pains which I thought might be back labor, but every visit to my OBGYN for the past 4 weeks I have been a centimeter dilated, no change. She told me it was just the baby pressing up against my spine and the nerves back there causing some back pain. Occasionally I have pains which feels a bit like menstrual cramps, but it could easily be my ligaments pulling. Although it's not near either hip bone, the pain is in the middle. I really don't want to have to worry about getting induced with even the possibility of a c-section. This is my first baby, I want to be able to experience it like every other new mother would. I know there is a possibility with any pregnancy, but I'm just looking for some good solutions. I have had a text book pregnancy, been growing like I should every week, but no dialation and have gained 40 lbs thus far. I just turned 39 weeks on the 3rd of September (Friday), it's Sunday now and my next appointment is this Wednesday. What should I be worried about, what kind of questions do I need to be getting answered, and what is there that I can do to help this along (I heard squats, walking and sex are best)?
moreOpen Question: Severely sprained ankle/torn ligaments, will it ever be back fully... etc?
I tore my left ankle very bad and I had two surgery's on it about 2 years ago. Then this year about 4 to 5 months ago, I had cheap shoes on and severely rolled my right ankle. I heard a pop it swelled up then I immediately went to the emergency doctor I was scared. The doctor did x-rays and he said he thinks its a category 2 and to comeback later after self therapy. I didn't get an MRI so I'm not exactly sure how bad it is but it hurt worse than my previous ankle injury in my left foot.
My left ankle pops really loud and my right starting to do it too the more I exercise it, why is that? My ankle size is still larger than normal but then again so is my left foot since its injury so they kinda match now lol. Is there a reason for it being so big and is there a way to normalize the size of the ankle?
Lastly, I know ligaments are like rubber bands and tearing them causes immense problems. I heard from one lady who deals with orthopedic rehab who told me that because we don't start out working out our ankles like we do our legs and arms, our ankle are actually weaker than should be. That even after torn ligaments we can workout and strengthen them to a be as they once were and even stronger than before. It made sense to me but then I remember all the doctors and people saying you can never get your ankle back to normal once badly sprained/torn, is this true?

moreOpen Question: How long will it take for my knee ligament to heal?
I have slipped about 3 weeks ago, did an Xray fortunately no bones were broken but my doctor told me my knee ligament was torn and just gave me some inflamatory medication and ordered bed rest and ice for at least a week. Fortunately I can walk fine, with slight pain in my right knee and so I go out at least once a week to at least socialise; however I'm finding it really difficult to climb up and down the stairs and within 3 weeks I'll be starting courses back at university where I have to use the stairs very often in order to access one lecture room or another. Would by that time my knee have healed? Have you got any suggestion for a faster recovery? And is it advisable to drive?

moreOpen Question: Knee sleeve for hunt seat/dressage rider?
I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Hypermobility Type, a rare connective tissue disorder in which the gene controlling collagen production is mutated. Because my body can't produce healthy collagen, much of my CT (ligament, tendon, muscle, skin, walls of organs, even skin) can be hypermobile and weaker than regular tissue. I have severe systemic joint pain as well as some spinal damage from a cheerleading injury that has riddled me with pain for years. I'm looking for a good knee brace to wear under my breeches while I ride in lessons at OSU and at shows across the state. The pain is only in my left knee, has been on and off for about a year, with more severe pain in the last 6 months, and my physical therapist believes it is because my the entire left side of my body is affected by my pelvis/left hip/left SI joint rotating medially and superiorly. When I go to ride two-point, my body is raised above the seat of the saddle and my hip angle is very small, causing severe hyperflexion of the spine for someone as mobile as myself. While I am trying to rotate my left side back out in order to do this, I am squeezing just below my knees and pointing my toes outward to have proper form. This causes a lot of stress on the knee, and that left knee has the pain because of the malalignment. I need a brace that will stabilize my knee and especially my patella, while still fitting under my breeches. If anyone knows of a good sleeve, I'd really appreciate it!
moreOpen Question: I'm 5 months pregnant, feel lots of hard kicks, also some weird pulling in lower stomach area..?
Hey, Im almost 24 weeks pregnant and had a few questions. This is my second successful pregnancy and Ive noticed some things different this time around.
First of all, I started feeling my son move by 13 or 14 weeks. Honestly, I dont know how that is possible, but I know I started feeling tiny flutters around that time. With my first son, I was about 20 weeks before I felt anything at all. Now that Im about 5 months, I think its kind of weird that I was still feeling such light movements with my first son, and now with the second, he is kicking me so hard that i can see my belly move! Why in the world would the first baby feel like its kicking so lightly, and at the exact same time with the second baby, he is kicking so hard my stomach moves? I know people usually say that everything happens faster with each progressive baby, but what changed in my body to allow me to feel kicks sooner? Did my uterus get thinner or something? lol.
My second question reguards all the stretching and pulling of ligaments and such. I never had any pain associated with stretching muscles or ligaments with my first son. The only time I had pain was about the 8th month when he "dropped". With this one, I started getting pains about 12 - 13 weeks. I got the round ligament pain when standing up too fast, and a lot of general pain in my abdomen area. Yesterday I had a lot of pain at the very bottom of my uterus near the pelvic bone. It felt tight and tender right across the pelvic bone for the whole day, but is gone today. What could have caused the pain so low? Is this a common place for pain due to a growing belly in the second trimester?

Last October I had an injury in my left knee which resulted in tears in my MCL and ACL ligaments and also my patella tendon was injured as well. After 2-3 months of bed rest, I started going to my office, but this worsened hthe problem. I had to undergo surgery in which the mcl and meniscus was repaired. The doctor says that the muscles in my left leg have gone very weak and the chances of grafting the ACL in my left leg are 50:50. He has advised me to do some exercises, and after consulting him, I joined a gym to make my muscles stronger. I do around 20-25 minutes cycling and do other machines while sitting. For the last 6-7 days, I have noticed that after 2-3 hours after ex. I feel numbness in the front part of my left foot and in the tips of my fingers. moreOpen Question: what do you think these symptoms mean?
most mornings I feel really sick, I get the runs and just generally have loo problems :/ then I get it later in the day sometimes. - I eat reasonably healthily.
also - my knee is messed up. Every time I bend it, it crackles, sometimes at gymnastics after having done a move it feels like it's twisting inside, and I can't stop it - afterwards it feels ok, but It's very painful to walk on.
- sometimes after this, I have ended up on crutches, depending on how severe it is.
- I have seen doctors and physios, and have have about 5 different diagnosis's of my injury
- It apparently isn't my cartilage or ligaments - as this is what the physio says
thanks xx

moreResolved Question: Did any of you expecting or current mommies not get these tests done?
I am in my early 20's and currently 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I was told that at certain stages of pregnancy you're supposed to get specific tests done to ensure your baby's health. I however, did not get these tests done for a few reasons. 1.) Women went through pregnancies for years and years with no special testing or technology and did just fine (deaths were mostly caused from a non sterile birth leading to infection) 2.) The amount of babies with actual problems is pretty small and some of the risks with the tests are greater and more dangerous than the actual thing they're testing for. 3.) False positives are so common so why put yourself through stress and worry to later find out it was a falsie? I have a prenatal appointment in a week and have been debating getting these tests done out of guilt that someone put on me calling me selfish and stupid but I feel torn with the issue. I am a good mother and have taken the best care of myself and my unborn baby this far - I eat great, hydrate, sleep enough, exercise, stay as stress free as possible, and have been blessed to not had any pregnancy symptoms/aches/pains/complications besides morning sickness at first and ligament pain in my sides after I eat. I always take vitamins and research like crazy and call the doctor with any question or concern I am having even if it is tiny. Have any of you mommies not got these tests done? I'm just here for opinion and support so don't ridicule me by saying I'm dumb or selfish because that is not what I'm posting this for. Thank you mommies :)!
Trimester 1:
ultrasound for fetal nuchal translucency
blood test for plasma protein
blood test for chorionic gonadotropin
Trimester 2:
blood tests for alpha-fetoprotein (down syndrome/spina bifida), hCG, estriol, and inhibin
Trimester 3:
glucose screening
strep b
I do believe I should get the glucose and strep b tests done as those can be very harmful to both baby and myself, and it's not too late for those! With the others however, if the baby has them, they have them and that's that. All you can do is prepare how life will be and you can't take medications to fix it so what's the point stressing your whole pregnancy when you can just find out later and deal the same?
Thanks!!
moreVoting Question: Increasing pain, swelling, knots forming, left leg and foot, doctors conflicting?
In February I started having pain at the top of my left shin when I squatted, went up/downstairs and knelt on it. Swelling soon started and pain increased. A hard knot began to form in the swelling on the top of my tibia and against my patella tendon. In the beginning of August 2010, the knot elongated in a hard ridge extending from that knot to another one that formed close to center of the knobby top of my tibia. Another followed, like the smooth rounded edge of my tibia was starting to grow. At the same time, my petetchiea has gotten more numerous, my legs bruising easily and my shin splints have returned (pain in lower shins, tenderness, pain when stretching toes). A week and a half before my sports doc visit, a knot has formed on the bone edge where the big toe separates from the rest of the foot bones. The pain has increased, at its worst it's like a paint scraper has been plunged under my kneecap and violently jerked it up so an ice pick can be stabbed into my shin. My left leg and foot have swollen noticeably and will get larger, the skin shiny and red, as I go about my day. My leg and knee is weaker now and has made me nearly fall and has locked up once.
Treatments and consults to date:
*GP thought it a bursitis, gave me an NSAID and prednesone, got rid of all the knee swelling, did not touch the knot,
*Ortho consult with x-ray, MRI, brace prescribed.
*MRI results were unremarkable even though there was a slice that showed a marble like bony bump on my tuberosity. Ortho said it was not causing pain, dismissed it.
*Ortho suggested lateral release because my cap was supposedly tilted though MRI report saw no ligament damage. He pointed out darkness "like eye shadow" they weren't sure of on my bone. He also pointed out white flecks under cap, swelling.
*Urgent care twice for bad fatigue, body aches and severe pain, given a pain med, speculated about the knots being OSD.
*Asked urgent care doc to run blood tests, one for RA. Had four kinds, nurse says they looked normal to her when I called for the results.
*Sports med doctor I waited two hours to see, gave me five minutes of his time. Had x rays done but only played with them during the visit, did not put them on viewer. I even brought my MRI but all he did was see the report of a normal knee and didn't bother to look at it. After testing my knee and some questions said it was patellar tendinitis, called the bumps pathological, ignored my foot and gave me a new NSAID, told me to get off the tramatol, do PT and come again in 6weeks. I got a knee strap from a nurse, prescribed to me by doctor rushed off the door to his afternoon surgery rounds.
The strap hurts, driving the pain into abscessed tooth category for being on the knots until it just sort of goes numb, the pain deadened but the feel and pressure of swelling remaining in joint, bone.
Other details:
Limb movement little impacted unless I kneel on knee, keep it bent or work the stairs-avoided
I am 29, female, active, work in warehouse/shipping maintenance

Despite relying more and more on right leg, though it tires or aches a bit, this is not happening to it.
What can be wrong with me? Can anyone tell me how soft tissue problems affect bone to the point of reshaping it or what would it be besides the big C? Has anyone been through this and finally got a diagnosis proven by the treatment healing/correcting it? I think my doctors aren't taking my problems or concerns seriously and if they are, not explaining their reasons for not seeing it as anything serious. I hate how they seem to expect me to just take their word as gospel. This body may be owned by an ignorant but I think I deserve a little piece of mind.
I go back to sports doc in six weeks and I plan not to step into another office until then. I hope I am better when I do, the strap and PT a thing of magic. I guess that leads to my last question. Since they seem to be dismissive, would there be any point or worth going to my GP before the six weeks is up if I find more knots or the ones I have get larger?
Thank you for your time,
Ashes

moreResolved Question: what is this pain in the back of my knee?
About a month ago I started feeling a slight pain in the back of knee sometimes when I went to a spinning class and then yesterday morning I squatted to pick something up and had a huge sharp pain in the same spot...like an intense charlie horse in the back of my knee and my toes almost felt numb. I still can't bend my knee without pain. I guess the pain is located in the lateral collateral ligament AREA.

So, is this nothing or what? and If I had to see a doctor is this something chiropractor could help with because I have a herniated disk on the same side of my back (l4/l5) but I doubt they are related...?
Thank you!by spinning I mean on an exercise bike ;)
moreVoting Question: I have problem in my shoulder?
I have been doing yoga and push-ups for about 4 months. But in the last month I must have done something wrong. My shoulder is fine doing normal activity, but if I lift my arm up and back more than 90 degrees there is a pain in the joint area of my shoulder. I thought of a ligament or muscle that must have gotten some damage, but surely that would have made the pain worse for any movement. Can this be an infection?

moreVoting Question: How can I solve this problem in our friendship?
Let me give you some background first. My friend "Sue" and I have been BFFs for around five years now. We always get along, but whenever we don't, we have a tradition of lightly kicking, slapping, or punching each other once, and the other will quit being annoying/mean/whatever. Primitive, yes. That's just how we were.
Then, the other day, we got into an argument. You see, "Sue" had been trash-talking one of my new friends behind his back, and was expecting me to laugh at him with her. This had been going on for 2 weeks now, and I told her to stop. She wouldn't stop at all and got defensive about it, saying that I shouldn't be mad because she wasn't talking about me anyway.
Then, all of a sudden, I punched her on her shoulder as hard as I could.
I have no idea what came over me, because I haven't ever punched her HARD. I obviously wasn't thinking anything, that's for sure.
Anyway, the good news is that we talked things out and everything is okay with the two of us. The bad news is that the shoulder I punched was healing from a previous injury and her ligaments were loose. She has to wear a shoulder brace, she cant swim anymore for another 3 months (she was a big swimmer) and she apparently hasn't even gone to the doctor yet. If she has to have surgery, the cash has to come out of my own pocket. Im 15, and my parents don't know anything about this.
I know I got what I deserve. All I want to know is how can I smooth things out with her family? Im sure they all hate me now and I really don't want my parents to find out. HELP!
moreVoting Question: REALLY BAD PAIN WHEN i WALK 20 WEEKS PREG?
OK so i asked something similar to this before, and I came to the conclusion that it is round ligament pain. I have a desk job so I was sittin down for the past four hours. when I got up I had really bad pain to walk and when I went to go tinkle the pain got worst I could barely stand up straight from the tailet cuz it felt like I was pullin something in my lower obdomen but I managed. The pain is only when I walk not when I'm sittin still, I dont have contractions and it doesnt feel like cramps. I really really really hate runnin to the hospital but I dont know if I should with this its not a pain that makes me cry but it does really hurt, do you think maybe a warm bath could help or something? what could this be is this really how round ligament pain feels?the pain feels like Ive doone a trillion crunches and now my lower obdomen is tight, and i'm pretty sure my baby is still moving
moreVoting Question: Do I need an ankle support?
Next year I'm going to Peru on an expedition, which involves a 5-day trek to Machu Picchu. In the past, I have sprained both my ankles, though the right one seems to be much more prone to injury as I also tore a few ligaments two years ago.
Normally both are fine with sport and such, so long as I am careful and warm up properly, although the right one does tend to hurt if it's intensive sport. A while ago I did my Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, and despite the fact that I wore proper hiking boots and I am used to walking, my right ankle started to get really painful on day 1 of a 2-day trek. When I took my boots off it was swollen and didn't go down much even after I iced it, so I strapped it up and continued to walk the next day to ease the pain a bit. It didn't really work and I ended up having to use a branch to support my leg as it started to shake towards the end of the day.
I really don't want this to happen in Peru as it's obviously really painful and makes walking difficult. My left leg also suffers a lot because it has to take most of the strain. I was wondering if I should get a proper neoprene ankle support, as I've heard they're very good and I'll be walking long distances pretty much every day.
Anyone had a similar problem?
Thanks.
moreVoting Question: Ligaments pulled in my shoulder?
well today my arm went out of socket and now my arm is bothering me it feel like its burning and my muscle on my back is kinda out its very hard to explain anyone think i pulled ligaments?
moreResolved Question: What does Round Ligament Pain feel like exactly?
I am just now 13 weeks, and for the past few days I have had this weird pain in the lower abdomen (right above my pelvic area). It usually happens when I am walking or standing up and tends to go away slightly when sitting down, but i can still feel it somewhat. Does this sound like round ligament stretching? It is hard to describe exactly what it feels like. Any advice is greatly appreciated! I was going to mention it to my doctor today, but totally forgot about it.
moreVoting Question: How do I help my finger heal better?
I am a key part of my soccer team, i'm the goalie. And the other during preseason someone shot the ball pretty hard, and I completely forgot about my mechanics for a second, and just acted out of instinct, so I just stuck my hand out to push it away from the goal and it [the ball] bent my finger back, and I ended up pulling some ligaments (i'm pretty sure) and as of now, its bruised on the side of my finger and still swollen. But here's the thing: We have our first scrimmage in 3 days, and I desperately want to prove myself in goal to our new coach, but I'm not going to be able to if I have a cripple finger. I do have a finger splint, and I've been icing it, but the healing process in SO LONG! Help?
moreResolved Question: Is it because I have weak knees?
I can't remember whether or not if the problems began before or after I started biking almost daily for the past 5 months. When I stand, I can't find a comfortable position that won't cause me to think about my knees. I have been constantly massaging daily in hopes that it would at least have some effect on them. I am 19 years old, and I don't know anyone that's having the same problems. It's come to the point where whenever I walk now, I have a little difficulty and tend to kinda limp around and walk strangely. I'm not sure if it's exactly my knees that's the problem because the pain seems to be coming from the area right underneath the knee-bone area. Also, I find it even much more difficult to walk or engage in any activities that require leg action whenever I smoke marijuana (please no anti-drug comments). Could it be a ligament and tendon problem?
moreVoting Question: how do i know if i torn a ligament in my knee?
Just recently, I started alot of running for soccer. One day while running, underneath my knee started hurting. My knee is swollen in that area now and it hurts really bad every time I walk. Now my other knee is starting to hurt because I have to keep putting more presssure on it. I continue to run everyday for soccer. When I run, I just drag the inured leg behind because I cannot lift it up to run. Is this going to make the injury worse?? And I don't know what is wrong with it?? Can someone help me please.
moreResolved Question: I am 28 weeks pregnant and I have been having very strong, sharp abdominal pains?
I am 28 weeks pregnant and have had no complications. I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks and everything was great. Now, even after walking through the grocery store or other simple tasks like sweeping the kitchen, I have sharp, aching pains in my abdomen surrounding my belly button to a radius of about 3'' out. They don't last terribly long and I wouldn't call them cramps. I have heard and read about round ligament pain and assumed that my pain was a bit stronger than that. (IDK can't really judge people's pain tolerance.) Also read up on Braxton Hicks and gathered they shouldn't be that painful either. I don't know, this is first baby and everything was smooth sailing until now so just wondering if anyone had any other ideas. I listen to women at my doc's office and I don't hear them complain of any pain after activity. It has also been difficult to make love because of the pain in the same general area. Just would like to have a little light shed on the subject.
moreVoting Question: Having knee pains? What could it possibly be?
I am in Marching Band (and before you laugh its really intense) and in one step we do, we have to twist our feet to the left. So it would be left foot on heel, right foot on the balls of your feet and we just move from our waist down. And we have to keep our feet together at all times. Well, as we did that, I was wearing long pants and since I am short (5'0) they were below my feet. My left foot was on my right pants leg and when we went to turn, my left foot was in the new direction but my right foot stayed in front position but my knee jolted and went in the new direction. And ever since, it has been giving me trouble. It feels like one of the ligaments has a cramp but its not a cramp. I have tried popping it, walking on it, but its been doing this for about four or five days. I CAN walk on it but it hurts to so I limp. I have had an ace bandage on it and a brace and it helps but not enough. I keep them both on or one of them on for about a day or two and take it off and its still the same. I have told my Director but its like he doesnt believe me and he tells me to do the best I can but then I get shunned by my Drum Majors (people who help direct). And so, I dont know what it could be. Help.
moreOpen Question: i think i hyperextended my thumb..?
i play volleyball and i was playing at a practice a week ago, when someone served it over, i went to set it but it dropped to quickly and it ended up just going through my hands... when it did this is pulled back both my thumbs verrrryyy hard. my left thumb hurt for about 15 mins, now its fine, but my right thumb still hurts a lot and its been a week. its only the base of my thumb that hurts and iv been icing it a lot. its still really swollen but not bruised. my mom thinks it might be a torn ligament but i dont think its that bad. it also hurts when i hit the ball or pull downward on it, but not when i pick things up. i just really want to know what it is, if you could help thatd be awesome :)ps. you dont have to be positive about your answer, if you know of anything that sounds like it could be this, you can just gimme the name and ill do the research :)
